At this time, it is not recommended for individuals to self-collect anal cytology due to lack of efficacy data. There are ongoing studies to determine if this is a viable recommendation.  One possibility is that thorough patient education and explanation on collection could make this an option in the future, but this is to be determined.

Does IANS have a formal position on the recommendation for patient vs provider collected anal cytology? I know that our practice has historically relied on self-collection, but after the number of unsatisfactory specimens, I have begun collecting myself and have not had any unsatisfactory specimens.
